It’s Corn vs. Soybeans in a Biofuels Debate - New York Times

So does this mean that good farm land will become more valuable. This article brings up the more costly long-term debate between transportaion, energy, and food. Not to say that there will be dire consequences, but it this is a new wrinkle.

The Worst Best Movie - Why on earth did The Searchers get canonized? By Stephen Metcalf

I disagree. The first time I saw the movie I was impressed by many of the little details (shooting of the dead apache's eyes, the medal, the Mexican Jefe, wedding fight etc.) that made the movie deep, rich and complex. Only with additional watchings do you realize, what kind of nuts would farm in the desert? Why is Scar a white dude with war paint?

I disagree about the women too. Yes, they are frontier women. The love triangle in the story is funny and makes the film more compelling. Certainly the complexities of Marty growing up also bring somethng else to the genre. What more do you want from a western? Is Red River so much better because tow guys want to "polish" each other's guns? Does Stagecoach have anything else but archetypes? Ethan's dogedness and darkness are a refreshing change to the dull goodness of Henry Fonda's Wyatt Earp in My Darling Clementine. Searcher's isn't a great movie with no reasons, the Metcalf just didn't explore them in his essay.
Why Diving Makes Soccer Great - In defense of soccer's biggest villains. By Austin Kelley

The thing about the floppers could be taken care of with one rule change. If you go out of the game you're out for ten minutes, then the ref can let you back into the game. This will allow for proper medical care for those who are going out of the game. If you're really hurt, the manager can replace you on the field with a substitution. The ten minutes will discourage teams and players to dive because it will leave your team a man down for a significant part of the game. But as a recent New Yorker article on FIFA's organization reported, unless the bosses get richer, nothing's going to change.

Chicago Tribune news: Hastert's wealth is grounded in land

Pretty good return on investment if you ask me. Let me get this straight .... Hillary makes $200,000 on cattle futures and all sorts of accusations fly. Hastert takes his salary (plus his wife's) and $200,000 and now worth at least $6 Million. Not only that, but he has had suspicious deals in secret trusts which he has gotten federal legislation through in order to improve the value of his property. Not even accusing him of theft or corruption, but this is what we would call a double standard.
