Lower-wage Americans burdened by income gap

Not only is this a long-term problem, but the better question is what can government do to protect its citizens. Should we raise walls of tariffs? I think if we did this to protect jobs, we would only in the end be swamped by the coming economy. Better to accept it and make sure that everyone has a lifeboat or at least a floatation device.

Now for the wealthy, they are going to be ok. They have the opportunities and the access. What they choose to do with it is another thing. Now what about the people in the middle and lower end of the scale? How should government protect them? First thing is to understand that this is coming and will effect folks. The GOP doesn't seem to even believe that this is happening. The Unions want raise tariffs and protect jobs. They're wrong, but at least they know that folks are losing jobs.

Better to give everyone a hand up through education and expanded opportunities. How best to do that? That's another great question. Affirmative Action? Lowering the cost of higher education? Reinstating the draft? Tax credits (for continuing education and R&D)? How do you get market forces to encourage people to do what's best for them?
